It’s a comedy drama about the art world set in the current day in London, England. Julian Sklar (Ian McKellen) is an elderly acerbic, once famous, artist approaching his death. He’s best known for a series of portraits known as “The Christophers.” Two sets have been released and some are worth millions. Sklar began the third set, but never completed them. Sklar’s greedy children, Barnaby (James Corden) and Sallie (Jessica Gunning), hire an art restorer, Lori Butler (Michaela Coel), to “finish” the paintings as Julian’s assistant, so that they can be sold posthumously for millions. Lori has a history with both Sallie and Julian, about which we learn during the film. The story is primarily about the uneven relationship that develops between Julian and Lori after Julian tells Lori, as his assistant, to destroy the unfinished Christophers.
